Call in Scotland Yard - Whitehall 1212 Victorian Police History Chris Forester

Forthcoming Meetings

Mar 26 Margaret Griffiths, an Archivist at the Woking History Centre will talk to us about Poor Law Records.

April 23 (not the last Friday) - Jane le Cluse - `Sex and Scandal in the Sussex Weald: Church Court Records'. Church Courts dealt with allegations of offences against the many laws made by the Church. Lots of the hearings concerned sexual misdemeanours of some kind, such as cohabitation and illegitimacy, so they got the nickname `Bawdy Courts'. The actual court records from the late 1500s to about 1700 are in Latin but the questioning of witnesses was recorded verbatim in English. Those records reveal details of the identities of the witnesses, including where they came from, and often give us snapshots of their daily lives.

May 28 Informal Meeting. The start-of-term school essay - `What I did in the holidays' - your parents' version and yours.

June 25 Chris Forester - `Call in Scotland Yard -Whitehall 1212'. Chris Forester will present extracts from cases dealt with by Scotland Yard from around the UK, some famous, some not so well known. Also included will be information on records, useful for family historians, held in Scotland Yard's archives and TNA.
