Jan 28 NB Saturday afternoon "Doors open 2pm. Speaker 2.30pm". Ian Chatfield - `History of the Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment to 1959'. Mr Chatfield has been the curator of the Regimental Museum at Clandon Park for seven years, after serving as a part time volunteer for about 15 years. He spent most of his working life in marketing and for nearly 17 years he served in the Territorial Army in Guildford. There Richard Holmes, the late Military Historian, raised his interest in regimental history. He will talk about the founding of the regiment on Putney Heath in October 1661 and will include a brief history about how the British Army evolved. Then he will tell us where the regiment served through the building of the Empire and during the two World Wars, with a bit more detail of the latter.
Feb 24 Informal Meeting - `Problems with Errors in Records'. I am sure we have all come across errors in various types of records and been misled by them. How do they arise and how can we spot them? Perhaps the father's name looks wrong on a birth or marriage certificate or the enumerator has noted down family names incorrectly. Bring your examples to discuss with fellow members and to show what we should watch out for.
Mar 23 NB Not last Friday Julian Pooley - `Out of Sight, Out of Mind? Sources for the History of Surrey's Mental Hospitals 1770-c1990.' Mr Pooley of Surrey History Centre is well known to many members. In this talk he will tell us about the history of the care of the mentally ill and mentally handicapped in Surrey from the late 18th century, using the records of private asylums in Surrey's quarter sessions records and also the huge archive held at Woking of Surrey's many mental hospitals, including Brookwood and the `Epsom Cluster', medical records and case papers. He will show how these records can be used by family historians with ancestors who were cared for at these hospitals.
