WSFHS – Miscellaneous Indexes and Resources

The following resources are available to members and visitors alike at West Surrey FHS Open Days. Access at other times may be arranged by prior agreement. Members will find further details in the current “Guide for Members”. Non Members requiring further information about these services should contact the Society’s Secretary.

All postal enquiries should be accompanied by a stamped self-addressed envelope. Overseas enquirers should send 3 IRCs.

IGI (INTERNATIONAL GENEALOGICAL INDEX), 1992 and 1988 editions

Content: County-by-county indexes of baptisms and marriages in parish registers and some nonconformist registers, on microfiche. Area covered: England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Channel Islands, Isle of Man.
Time span: From earliest registers up to approximately 1875 (some later).

SURREY STRAYS INDEX

Content: A slip index of people belonging in Surrey, recorded in other counties. Sources include parish registers, census returns, settlement papers, poll book entries, Freemen’s lists, monumental inscriptions. The index for the whole county is maintained by East Surrey Family History Society.
Area covered: Mainly Britain, including Channel Islands, with a few from other countries.
Time span: Majority in the 19th century, with occasional entries from earlier centuries back to the 16th century.

FAMILY ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM “CAMBERLEY NEWS”

Paul Charleton is in the process of producing, is an index of all the family announcements from “The Camberley News” and associated papers. Over 2700 papers and over 57000 names have indexed, starting from 1950 to the present day. 1991 and 2001 have been published on fiche. Please Click Here to see current status.

Paul Charleton is also indexing the Rate Books at the Surrey Heath Museum. So Far 1929, 1924, 1918 & 1914 have been indexed. 1911 is being indexed at the moment

PALLOT’S MARRIAGE AND BAPTISMS INDEXES 1780-1837

Content: Marriage Index More than 1.5 million marriages taken from the original hand-written index held by the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies, Canterbury. Entries are mainly from London and Middlesex, but the index also includes entries from 2,500 parishes in 38 counties outside London.
Content: Baptisms Index 200,000 baptisms covering 22 parishes in London and Middlesex and around 27 other parishes including Wales.
Time span (both indexes): 1780-1837.
Publication: The indexes have been produced by Ancestry.com on CD-ROM. They can be purchased from TWR Computing. 5 Mexborough Business Centre, College Road, Mexborough, South Yorkshire, S64 9JP

SURREY LAND TAX INDEX

Content: Series of volumes (compiled by Mrs P Neville) containing alphabetical listings of names appearing in Land Tax assessments, mainly of owners and occupiers of property. They do not show in which years the names appear, and are thus only a general index to the assessments, which are available on microfilm at Surrey History Centre.
Area covered: All non-metropolitan parishes in Surrey.
Time span: 1780-1831 for most parishes, up to 1832 for a few.
