The Hundreds of Surrey

The HUNDRED was an administrative subdivision of an English county. They were first defined long before the Norman Conquest, and were not finally abolished until in 1896 they were replaced with the rural districts following the Local Government Act of 1894. They were important areas in the administration of justice until Tudor times, and the Hundred Courts dealt with minor offences. The Hundred was also a basic unit for military and taxation purposes and very many of the name lists used by genealogists and family historians - which were originally compiled for these purposes - are arranged according to Hundreds.

The following lists provide a key to searchers using such sources. First is a list of all the Hundreds of Surrey showing which of the ancient ecclesiastical parishes they covered. There then follows an alphabetical list of the parishes showing in which Hundred each fell. AJCT/CRW
