Introduction
The International Genealogical Index (`the IGI') of the Genealogical Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (`the Mormons') is without doubt the most valuable single tool ever produced for the study of the genealogy of the British Isles, even though its coverage there is patchy. It is also of course useful for genealogical research in many other countries. Its value is greatly enhanced by the fact that it is freely available on the Internet at <familysearch.org>. Also complete or partial sets are available all over the world in Mormon Family History Centres, in Local Studies Libraries, Record Offices and with Family History Societies. Microfiche is easy and cheap to post, and most genealogists are able to consult this source, wherever they happen to be located. Members of the West Surrey FHS, of course, have access to various editions of the IGI which have been purchased by the Society over the years; they should consult their `Guide to Members' or `Root and Branch' for details.

There are a number of microfiche detailing the coverage of the IGI, but they are rather difficult to use, and in some respects are misleading. This handlist is designed for IGI users who wish to determine readily which Surrey parishes/periods are covered.

Various baptism, marriage and burial transcripts are available which cover parishes/periods not in IGI some are on fiche, some on CD Rom. Details are on the Society’s Website <wsfhs.org> and in the Society’s current list of publications.

When using the IGI it is extremely important to realise that like any index it is subject to the limitations of its compilation and layout. This makes inevitable certain deficiencies which must be taken into account by the searcher. Every genealogical consultant has many enquiries where over-enthusiastic, premature or careless use of the IGI has seriously misled a researcher. The following should be borne in mind:

(1) It was compiled from (a) microfilm, not the best material for easy legibility especially for old or faded original material and (b) personal records, which may be inaccurate or blatantly wrong.

(2) It was compiled by volunteers, who have inevitably, rarely been experts in the surnames of the areas they are indexing, and often have had some difficulty with early scripts. While the Mormon system of cross-checking double entry helps, all too often there appears to have been made a mistake common to both data inputters.

(3) The format is, of necessity, standardised, and may, therefore, omit details, some of which may be vital. For example, a person baptised as an adult at the age of 40 will be filed chronologically under the date of baptism, not the date of birth, and the latter may not be given - it is exceedingly easy to miss such entries.

(4) Periods given in the lists of coverage may not be accurate. In particular they may give the impression of completeness when this is not the case. For a start there may be unmentioned gaps in the original registers. In addition gaps may pertain where the original record exists but are not included in the index. For example, especially in the earlier editions, much post-1800 Surrey coverage is taken from films of the bishop's transcripts, very large numbers of which were in too poor a condition to film when it was made; the microfiched list does not make this clear, and implies completeness where none exists. While this applies to many fewer parishes in the 1988 edition, it is still a substantial problem. Every effort has been made in this list to indicate such gaps.

(5) In some editions/parts of the IGI surname variants are grouped together and cross-referenced; in others they are not. This causes confusion, and must be checked by the user on each occasion a search is made.

(6) Early editions of the IGI contain few marriages, even the Nov 1988 edition contains far fewer than baptisms. No IGI edition contains burials, and these must be sought in transcripts. Progress in transcription and indexing is listed in `Root and Branch'. It is a cardinal error not to seek the burial of ancestors!

(7) In some editions of the IGI, certain entries for Surrey parishes in the Metropolitan area of south London may appear in the section for London/ Middlesex, and not in Surrey. Because of Surrey's close links with the Metropolis, it is always sensible to search for a `lost' event there as well as under Surrey.

(8) Some parishes are listed under titles which are not familiar to the British researcher. For example, the parish universally known as St Olave Southwark is listed as St Olave Bermondsey, because it was in the Borough of Bermondsey, and this is one of the bases of classification used by the London Metropolitan Archives, where the records are kept. However, St Olave was never in the ancient parish of Bermondsey; thus a searcher could easily be misled seriously.

For these reasons and others, it is essential wherever possible for the IGI searcher to use the index as a finding aid only, and check any entry found against the original, a film of the original or a full accurate transcript. Also, failure to find an entry in the IGI may not be as conclusive evidence as it might appear.
