Forthcoming Meetings Dec 8 A Brief History of Woking- lain Wakeford. lain was born and bred in Woking and has been researching and writing about Woking's history for the past 30 years. A brief history of Woking from prehistory to the present day: including the Anglo-Saxon monastery of Woking, Woking Palace, the Wey Navigation, Basingstoke Canal, local industries, the railway, the Necropolis Company and the development of the new town of Woking. Jan 12 `London Ancestors'- Michael Gandy, who will be giving us information to help us trace those of our ancestors who lived in London, is a Fellow and former Chairman of the Society of Genealogists and is the present editor of the Genealogists' Magazine. Feb 9 `Dating and Understanding Family Photographs'- Jayne Shrimpton. If you read some of the Family History Magazines, have been to Who Do You Think You Are? at Olympia, or have read one of her books then Jayne's name is likely to be familiar to you. Having studied the History of Dress and worked in the National Portrait Gallery she is well placed to help us to date and interpret some of those old photographs that we have lurking in boxes or old albums. If you wish to bring along one or two of those mysterious portraits then she will also be happy to look at one or two of your old photographs on an individual basis at the end of her talk. Mar 8 `Researching from Newspapers' - Roy Stockdill. Newspapers are a treasure trove of information for family historians - from the lists of births, marriages and deaths and those who died in the World Wars, through the reports of town and village occasions to the court reports - and so much more!
