CD 1 Surrey Poor Law - Index & Calendar

Compiled and prepared for publication by John Holland.
This CD contains an Index of over 84,000 entries (including Place Names) and a Calendar of all known Poor Law Records for Non-Metropolitan Surrey. Where records for those Surrey Parishes which are now part of Metropolitan London, eg Camberwell, Clapham, Lambeth, Newington, Southwark, Streatham and Tooting are known to exist, the Local Studies Library or London Metropolitan Archives should be consulted.
Two important classes of Parochial Records have not been included. They are:
  1. Accounts, which often have large numbers of Paupers' names.
  2. Vestry Minutes, which are almost solely concerned with the administration of Poor Relief.

CD 9 Early Woking Buildings and their Occupants

Compiled by Phillip Arnold (first published 2001 in the Record Series - RS36). 2nd edition April 2008 (amended Feb 2013.) Publishing on CD has allowed the inclusion of well over 100 photographs, many other illustrations and maps. In the introduction Phillip Arnold writes: 'Woking has a number of pre-18th century buildings. The aim is to identify all those buildings in the old Manors of Woking and Sutton and the ancient parish of St Peter's, Woking which was more or less co-terminus with the Manors. A small piece of the Manor of Woking, part of Knaphill, lay in Horsell parish and an even smaller part in Bisley. Most of the land holdings within the area of the Manor were copyhold, there being very few freeholds. As a general rule only those buildings existing at the beginning of the 18th century are included although there are exceptions.'
An index of occupants is included.

For civil purposes St Botolph was divided into two parts, each with separate civil jurisdiction. The two parts were St Botolph Aldgate, Middlesex (Without) and St Botolph Aldgate, London (Within), the latter being the portion of the parish within the old City walls. Compiled and indexed by Chris Willis, edited by Sue Turner, 2009.
This CD contains the six Board School Maps of London, produced in 1906/7 by the London Schools Authorities. They were based on the 6inch Ordnance Survey stock of the time and over printed with boundaries of the areas used in controlling the schools and also with the actual schools. To provide an index into the maps, a Street Index (published by West Surrey Family History Society as Research Aids 44-46) designed for the 1:2500 Alan Godfrey Maps has been included and an index to all the schools in the overlay. You can go directly from the index to the locality on the appropriate map. The 'London County Council List of the Streets and Places' published in 1912 is also included on this CD. This includes all the streets as at that date, plus a list of abolished street names. There is no direct link from this to the maps, but a Reference Map is included to assist.

CD 25 A Guide to Surrey Schools and their Records - October 2011

Compiled by Cliff Webb, who writes in the introduction: 'The records of schools can be useful supplements and substitutes to others for the pursuit of genealogical research, and have considerable value for family history purposes in their own right. This is an attempt to list all educational establishments within the area covered by the ancient county of Surrey, excluding the old London County Council (LCC) area (which are covered by my Index to London Schools and their Records published by Society of Genealogists Enterprises, Ltd), and any records of genealogical interest... Schools were required to keep certain records under various school codes. For example the Elementary School Code, 1903 laid down that all schools should have (a) registers of admission, progress and withdrawal (b) attendance registers and (c) a register of summaries'.

The Surrey Recruitment Registers

Surname Index and Extracts CD published by the Surrey History Trust, 2005. This first CD from the Surrey History Trust contains some unique information. Recruitment registers for the period of the First World War are extremely rare as such records were supposed to have been destroyed after the war. It covers the period 1908 to 1933 giving details of just under 85,000 soldiers. Of these registers, all but one volume relate to the 31st Regimental District, based at Kingston, including the Borough of Croydon and the last register to the 2nd Regimental District, based at Guildford.
For more details see the review of the CD published in the December 2005 issue of Root and Branch or click here.
